Are you someone who has always been curious about Medellin but hesitated due to safety concerns? It’s time to assess your beliefs guy’s and check if they are still real. In this article, I will debunk the myths surrounding Medellin’s safety and provide you with first-hand experiences from those who have visited this vibrant city.
I will start by sharing this story: The past week, while I was driving around Medellin normally in the mornings I met in the Laureles neighbourhood a lovely couple of guys from Germany ( Lennart and Mirna), who came from Munich and were travelling Colombia and their final stop, was Medellin so, to begin with, they wanted to go to San Felix to do paragliding, and in our way back they were interested in visiting Guatape as well, so I picked them up the next day and we made Guatape as well, they spent the whole day in the “Pueblo” and our journey back to Medellin they both started sharing their experiences, we all talked about Germany in general, the UK, and Colombia, we’re serious about what we’re discussing but suddenly Mirna said something like ” Rolando I was going to be attacked by a little puppy dog, he almost bite me”, we all laughed so hard and it took us to conclude that this is why Medellin is so dangerous.( we laughed so hard for a couple minutes guys). Later I drop them off at the Rionegro International Airport to take their flight back home. Hey, chicos I hope to visit you both shortly in Munich.
Now, please let me guys share with all of you some data:
“Even 10 years ago, Medellin was a “bad-ass town”. Violence reigned, civil society had been destroyed and no one seemed to know how to put Medellin back together again.
Fast-forward to the present and Medellin is a delightful place of law-abiding entrepreneurial folk. With an economy that is among the fastest growing on the continent, it is one of the great success stories of Latin America.”
By the way guys, Where is Medellin Located in South America?, just briefly guys, Medellin, is officially named the city of the Special District of Science, Technology and Innovation, ( Wikipedia.org) It’s crazy guys and I am so happy seeing how the world and main source references are looking at us right now. Que chimba Parce!!!
When people think of Medellin, one of the first things that often comes to mind is its history of violence. However, the reality today is quite different. Medellin has significantly improved its safety and security situation over the past decade. for me as a local, the number of visitors for instance that go to La Comuna 13 in San Javier’s neighbourhood is very amazing; there is no chance that could have happened 20 years ago. I see everyday foreigners walking from La Comuna 13 tourist hotspot towards the San Javier train station and going back to their places.
To provide a clearer picture of Medellin’s safety situation, let’s take a closer look at the crime rates in the city. According to official statistics, both violent and property crimes have seen a significant decline over the years.
The local authorities have been proactive in implementing measures to reduce crime. This includes improving law enforcement agencies’ capabilities, targeting organized crime groups, and fostering a culture of reporting crimes among residents. These efforts have contributed to a safer environment for both locals and visitors.
according to Medellinadvisors.com : ” The barrios of Robledo, Villa Hermosa, La America & San Javier all experienced a 5-year decline in homicides. Even after the lockdowns of 2020, when the streets were quiet, homicides continued to fall. This is encouraging.”
Another common misconception about Medellin is that it is still under the control of drug cartels. While the city did have a troubled past with drug-related violence, it has come a long way since then.
In recent years, Medellin has undergone a remarkable transformation. The authorities have cracked down on drug cartels, dismantling their operations and apprehending key members. This has significantly weakened their influence and restored law and order in the city.
Today, Medellin is a thriving metropolis with a rapidly growing economy, attracting both local and international businesses. The city’s focus has shifted towards innovation, entrepreneurship, and tourism, leaving its dark past behind.
It’s important to note that while the drug trade may still exist in some parts of Colombia, it does not define Medellin as a whole. The city has moved on and is now focused on building a brighter future for its residents and visitors.
To truly understand the transformation that Medellin has undergone, it’s important to hear from those who have witnessed it firsthand. Many tourists and expats who have visited Medellin in recent years have been amazed by the city’s progress and the warm welcome they received.
Visitors often express their surprise at the modern infrastructure, efficient public transportation system, and the overall sense of safety they experienced during their stay. The city’s commitment to improving the quality of life for its residents is evident in the numerous parks, libraries, and social initiatives that have been implemented.
Moreover, Medellin’s vibrant cultural scene, with its art galleries, museums, and music festivals, showcases the city’s thriving creativity and innovation. This cultural renaissance has played a significant role in reshaping Medellin’s identity and attracting visitors from around the world.
Let’s hear Sara, another traveller from the United States whom I have the pleasure of meeting guys:
